Topic: animal models of sepsis

In May 30, 216 journal club Ms Fatima Ismail Hassan discussed animal models of sepsis, where she started by defining sepsis, causative agents, and symptoms. She described systemic inflammatory response syndrome and its similarity with sepsis symptoms. Fatima described four models; Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) model, bacterial inoculum, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), and colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP) model; including advantages and disadvantages. She concluded by stating the limitations of animal models of sepsis in that they do not mimic exactly the metabolic, physiologic and immunologic changes observed in humans. Valuable questions were asked and responded to at the end of the presentation. Professor Abdollahi commented on the presentation and highlighted important areas to note.
